Apollo 8 globetrotted around the moon in a Christmas flight, splashdown 6,000 yards from the Yorktown in the Pacific. The crew, safe and relieved, planned steak and eggs for breakfast as President Johnson called the wives.
A naval officer claims captors forced phony navigational charts to prove the USS Pueblo violated North Korean waters. He said he inserted deliberate errors, noting one chart would imply 2,500 knots. The crew, including Cmdr. Lloyd Bucher, suffered injuries. one sailor died.
NASA acting head Dr. Thomas O Paine called Apollo 8 a triumph and said the U S may follow with two lunar landings in 1969 and two more before 1970. He stressed the goal remains risky until Apollo 9 tests the lander, with Apollo 10 and 11 poised to push toward a July or August landing as the nation presses Kennedy's lunar deadline.
