Rent rules set by Price Commission on household increases
After five weeks of deliberation the Price Commission announced rent guidelines. Landlords may raise rents beginning Dec. 29 to cover higher operating costs and taxes with three methods: a flat 2.5 percent, an unspecified amount for taxes or services, and up to 10 percent for capital improvements. Most units are expected to rise 3 to 3.5 percent, though critics warn landlords could seek much higher increases. Tenants must receive 30 days notice with a layman’s explanation and may review landlord records or appeal to the IRS.

Inflation cools as Nixon controls show effect in 1971
Inflation for 1971 is expected to end at about 3.5 percent, with November CPI up 0.2 percent. The year may not exceed 3.5 percent, well below 1969 and 1970 highs, aided by the wage price rent freeze. The administration expects further moderation but cautions larger increases may appear in coming months. Barton Candy recalls about 4,000 fruitcakes after pecan contamination with moths, but most cakes are unaffected and illness is unlikely.
