Record Christmas mail volume hits 8.6 billion gifts
The U.S. Postal Service reports 8.6 billion gifts, greeting cards and items mailed during the holiday season, a record that surpasses last year by 350 million pieces. Deputy Postmaster Merrill A. Hayden says most post offices will be clear of Christmas mail by this evening and overseas mail delayed by a dock strike will be delivered in time for Christmas.

Mrs Bruce leaves 570 million estate in will
New York reports that Mrs Ailsa Mellon Bruce, once the wealthiest American woman, left a gross estate of 570648725. Probate filings show 556534826 goes to charitable and public institutions led by the Andrew Mellon Foundation named for her father. Bruce died August 25, 1969 and was divorced in 1945 from David K E Bruce.

New York producer David Merrick aired his car gripes on the front page of the New York Times declaring the Chrysler Imperial a pile of junk. Bruce’s estate, one of New York’s largest probates, will see about $7 million claimed by governments due to tax allocations. A tax-approval hearing for the estate’s attorneys is set for January 18.
