William J. Nelson, 58, of 136 Union Street Bennington, died after his car left Route 29 near Greenwich, New York, hit a concrete wall and slid 210 feet on the shoulder. He was taken to Mary McClellan Hospital in Cambridge, where he died at 1 30 a.m. An autopsy will determine cause. Trooper R H Endee investigated. Nelson was a native of Vermont.

Nixon signs $1.6 billion plan to attack cancer nationwide
President Nixon signed a 1.6 billion dollar three year authorization aimed at a national cancer assault. The measure keeps NCI oversight, adds a presidential panel, expands the National Cancer Advisory Board, and funds early detection programs and 15 treatment research centers. The American Cancer Society called it a milestone and noted cancer deaths were about 325,000 last year with 108,000 lives savable if detected early.
