Close Vermont Police Academy to cut 1976 budget
Vermont Administration Secretary Robert M. Wilson proposed closing the three year old Vermont State Police Academy at the former sanitorium and shifting training to Norwich University or Vermont Technical College in Randolph. The plan drew protests from Lt. John A. Poljacik who calls the Rutland academy the best site for extensive training. The facility employs about 20 people and is used by the Vermont National Guard and other state departments. In Rutland, Dr. John R. Froines said the controversy over his appointment raised awareness of occupational health and preventive measures, adding Vermont is in good shape on industrial safety.

Calls for probe after body found at Southview Cemetery
In Berkshire North Adams a grisly discovery in the pauper’s section at Southview Cemetery spurred calls for an investigation into the Cemetery Department. James O’Neil reported remains and a casket found crushed and unearthed, with him noting prior sightings of partial remains and flesh near the site. Councilor Jack Gigliotti demanded accountability, arguing the remains were not old and could belong to anyone, as officials described routine displacement during new grave digging. The scene prompted outrage over safety and burial practices.
