Lynn to replace Ash as budget director

President Ford will appoint Housing Secretary James T. Lynn to replace Roy Ash as budget director. Ash’s resignation was accepted with praise for his dedication and ability to control federal spending. Ash will stay until early February to help finish the 1976 budget.

Speakership snag may win support for Rep. Beattie

In Montpelier Vermont a potential House deadlock looms as some young legislators may back Rep. Orrin Beattie against the main candidates. Beattie, liberal compared with Hebard, trails OConnor among Democrats and could force multiple ballots without 76 votes. Republicans hold a slim 150 member majority and the speaker race near.

Israelis raid Majdal Zoun amid Lebanon border clashes

Israeli helicopters crossed into Lebanon and blew up six houses in Majdal Zoun after a raid on an Arab village. Lebanese reports say four villagers were kidnapped and a child wounded as Palestinian guerrillas attacked Hanita and border security was breached. Israel and Lebanon trade blame with no casualties reported in Tel Aviv.
