Bennington Planners Endorse Regional Plan With Conditions
Bennington officials agreed to join countywide regional planning but set two conditions. If Pownal Shaftsbury Arlington and Manchester do not participate Bennington would not enter the program. The group also seeks guidance from the state planning office on what Bennington would receive for its money. Total regional planning for 16 towns is estimated at 48000 with two thirds federal, one sixth state and one sixth shared by towns. Bennington’s share would be about 4100. If Bennington declines the others’ shares would rise. The matter aims for a March town meeting vote and requires dovetailing with Pownal and Shaftsbury plans but may not need full participation. Albany Man Injured In Stolen Car Chase
A state police chase on U S 7 ends when a stolen 1964 Plymouth leaves the road near Lake Shaftsbury and overturns. Donald Beattie, 28, of Albany, suffered head injuries and was taken to Albany Medical Center after being found in the wrecked taxi cab. Police say Beattie had been a fare in a Hutch’s Taxi Service cab and fled after the driver stopped for instructions.
