Tonkin Gulf Incident Noted As Potentially Manipulated Claim
A former Naval officer in Cheshire, Connecticut says the 1964 Gulf of Tonkin incident may have been deliberately maneuvered and misleading information released to justify the Vietnam War. He cites a Maddox sonar operator who told him readings showed no torpedo approach, while officers ordered evasive action. White, a Dartmouth graduate and teacher, resigned in 1965 and advocates inquiry into the Tonkin Resolution. He disclosed the conversation in a letter to the New Haven Register, urging accountability and identification of the sonar officer.
