The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board on Friday approved the construction of a nuclear power plant on the Connecticut River at Vernon Vermont. The decision grants the project authorization under federal safety standards and paves the way for building to proceed.
A Faucett Airlines DC4 crashed into a mountainside near Huanuco while en route Lima to Tingo Maria killing 66 aboard including two Americans Evelyn Craig aged 47 and Joseph Newman 69. Also on board were Belgians Italians and possibly five French nationals. An emergency team reached the wreckage as rescuers searched the jungle region in the Andes for survivors.
The Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corp plan to build a 540000 kilowatt plant faced opposition from several towns and the states of New Hampshire and Massachusetts. The AEC board must decide within 45 days whether to accept or reconsider, while Vermont Yankee prepares to fund with a $10 million stock sale after interim approval.
Bruce McConnell, 21, of North Adams, is scheduled for trial February 5 in the August slaying of Bonnie Pearson, 19, of Newport New Hampshire. The date was set by the Massachusetts Superior Court via Chief Justice G Joseph Tauro to Berkshire County Superior Court Clerk Nelson Foot.

Glassboro State College students walked 40 miles to Ft. Dix delivering a large Christmas card signed by about 2,000 students.
Washington reports a bipartisan 2.7 billion military pay bill cleared both chambers in under two hours. The plan grants 5.6 percent base pay increases this year with further raises in 1968 and 1969, retroactive to Oct. 1, and provides bonuses of 135 million before Christmas for soldiers sailors airmen and marines.

The Vermont Legislative Council forwarded Rep. Riehle’s bill to the 1968 legislature proposing removal of all off premise signs. It would create state owned sign plazas, a travel information division, regulate on premise signs, and establish statewide information services.
