Thomson Meets With Taiwanese Leaders In Taipei Visit
Governor Meldrim Thomson Jr of New Hampshire met Adm Soong Chang-chih Taiwan chief of general staff in Taipei for talks on mutual interests. The Thomson party including his son Peter left Taipei for central and southern Taiwan to visit provincial government military and economic sites before returning next Tuesday. A schedule of local hockey and recreation events followed with multiple sessions listed for Sunday through Saturday, including Drury Pittsfield game cancellations and various hockey and figure skating activities.

Precautions urged with snowblowers in Vermont
A Vermont Medical Center spokesman cautioned residents to stop snowblower repairs without turning off power and placing in neutral. Robert Berger said the hospital treated several cases in the past 48 hours where workers damaged hands and fingers by not taking safety steps.

New York UPI reports Walter Vanney of The Babcock and Wilcox Co says an immediate mass shift from oil and gas boilers to coal across U.S. electric utilities would require at least fifteen years. He notes boiler makers lack capacity to supply and install all needed coal boilers, with about 30 percent of generation currently oil and gas fueled.
