Bail laws studied by Vermont ACLU group
A Vermont ACLU special committee in Burlington plans a study on high bail and preventive detention in the state. Led by Charles Tetzlaff with Richard Axelrod Paul Berch William Moeser Edson McKee and David Potter the group will review district court records to gauge bail levels and outcomes including jury exclusions for the poor and penalties for minor drug offenses. The Defender notes Vermont's Bail Reform Law is not universally followed and does not authorize preventive detention. The study will be supervised by college instructors and involve student researchers.
