The Vermont Supreme Court ruled a district court overstepped by suppressing all testimony in the case of Cpl. Richard E. Alexander and his wife Lorraine. They face charges for selling and installing unlicensed fire detection equipment after an October 1969 fire at the Old Jelly Mill Restaurant and Gift Shop in Dummerston. The court remanded for further proceedings and ordered a jury trial.
The Supreme Court refused to disturb New Jersey's law that requires local districts to bus private and parochial school students within 20 miles or pay up to 150 dollars beyond that, matching public school transportation. The West Morris Regional Board of Education argued it violated the equal protection clause and church-state separation. The state Supreme Court previously upheld the law after a 1947 ruling on reimbursement.
