Lead in Bennington Water Prompts Health Meeting Tonight

State health officials warn many residents may have water with lead levels above the safety limit. Sanitary engineer Linden Witherall will meet Bennington Water Board at 7 pm to discuss the scope and options. Readings show a Putnam Street family at six times the max level and other cases including a deceased family dog and puppy illnesses linked to lead exposure. A long range plan to replace lead pipes is being prepared by Town Manager Louis C. Savelas, with more tests planned.

Carter hedges on tax cut after Lance talks

President elect Jimmy Carter said a tax cut is one possibility to stimulate the economy but has not decided. He noted his OMB nominee Thoms Lance called tax cut almost a certainty, yet Carter said it is too early to decide and a joint decision with Congress would be needed. Lance said a $10 billion tax cut is possible among options and advisers Brimmer and Rivlin agreed caution is warranted.

Fire destroys two buildings behind old box factory in Bennington

At 3 this morning Bennington Fire Chief Charles Sawyer led crews in fighting a blaze that damaged two buildings behind the East Main Street box factory. Officers Michael McGarrahan and Michael Varth spotted the fire. Fire officials investigated a suspicious cause as hydrants on Main Street malfunctioned during efforts.

Vermont Supreme Court Chief Justice Albert Barney Jr. urged reforms citing national discontent with justice administration. He proposed denying bail for repeat offenders on pretrial offenses, speeding case resolution, reassessing parole, and public-backed standards for sentencing and rehabilitation. Troy Woman Killed in Route 9 Crash Near Bennington

A 22 year old A'iros New York woman Debra Coonradt died after a two car collision on Route 9 near Bennington at 6 34 pm Sunday. William Peele 22 of Clifton Park and William Hogan 27 of Bennington were injured. Hogan in fair condition at St. Peter's Hospital Albany while Peele remained in Putnam Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. Police say eastbound Hogan's Ford and Coonradt's Chevrolet collided with left fenders touching. This marked the 16th Bennington Canty fatality this year.
