Ohio State halfback Archie Griffin won the 40th Heisman Trophy at the Downtown Athletic Club in a landslide vote over USC senior Anthony Davis. Griffin, 20, set an NCAA rushing record with 22 straight 100-yard games and led the nation in rushing, while Davis contributed 1,917 yards total offense and 11 kickoff returns. Griffin’s mother had long dreamed of a Heisman for a family member, and coach Woody Hayes praised his star as the best college player he has seen.
