Vermont colleges and UVM approve merger plan

Vermont state colleges and the University of Vermont voted to merge their systems creating a single coordinating board. Gov. Deane C. Davis backed the plan, which preserves individual identities while abolishing separate administrative offices and shaping a Vermont Higher Education System.

India on war footing as Pakistan launches full scale conflict

Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a full scale war after a series of Pakistani air and artillery strikes. Pakistan called all ex servicemen and under 60 to serve as long as necessary. Emergency declared, defense of India bill planned, casualties not yet reported. The crisis follows Pakistan’s attacks near the West Pakistan border and in East Pakistan's Bengali conflict. Quints Born in Liverpool at Local Maternity Hospital

A Liverpool mother, Mrs Grace Brown, gave birth to quintuplets at Liverpool Maternity Hospital. All five infants, three girls and two boys, arrived by a special surgical team in 13 minutes and are reported in satisfactory condition. The girls weighed 1 lb 13 oz, 2 lb 6 oz, and 3 lb. the boys weighed 3 lb 4 oz and 1 lb 13 oz.
