Pedal People conclude 560 mile Burlington to Montreal ride

Seventeen youths and three adults completed a 280 mile ride from Burlington to Montreal and back riding bikes loaded on a trailer after traveling by car. The group included Mr and Mrs Whittemore and Mrs Steffen with no rain or mishaps until the last day.

Doria Threatens New England With Hurricane Watch

Hurricane watches stretched along southern New England as Tropical Storm Doria moved up the coast toward six states. Warnings reached Portsmouth New Hampshire while gale alerts extended to Eastport Maine. Civil Defense units in four states were on alert as Doria, at 60 mph winds offshore, approached Long Island and the Connecticut coast.

Ky seeks high court order to remove his name

In Saigon, Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky asked Vietnam's Supreme Court to strike his name from the Oct. 5 presidential ballot, hoping to withdraw as the election is deemed unlawful. The court had last week put Ky and Truong Vinh Le on the ballot, despite ineligibility concerns, while Thieu campaign efforts continue.

East Germans back Big Four plan on Berlin status

East Germany said it would not block talks with West Germany to implement the Big Four agreement on Berlin. Neues Deutschland praised the accord as recognizing sovereignty and limiting West German rights in West Berlin, while noting details remained secret. Talks by Britain France the Soviet Union and the United States were set to start next month after government approval.

Weather outlook with showers and mild temperatures

Rain today and tonight diminishing to a few showers Sunday. Local streams may flood. Lows near mid 50s to 60s with highs in mid 60s to 70s today and tomorrow. Precipitation chances fall to 80 percent tonight as easterly winds rise to 12 to 25 mph.

U.S. denies funds for school busing

The Nixon administration announced the first $22.5 million of a total $62 million in desegregation grants and said none may be used for pupil transportation. Office of Education officials cited White House policy to avoid busing funding, with Hillsboro County School Board in Tampa receiving the largest award at 2.225 million and Jackson Miss. district next at 2.0165 million. Funds are spread across multiple southern and border states.

Gov Davis Tours Earth Peoples Park Commune

Gov Deane C. Davis spent several hours at Earth Peoples Park in the Northeast Kingdom. The 70-year-old governor toured cabins, gardens, and spoke with about 100 inhabitants, saying their land devotion seemed genuine and well held. He visited after rumors and wanted to see it himself.

Bennington Water Dept Regulars Hike To Camp Coomash

In the mid-1920s an inspection tour of Sucker Pond was a regular Bennington Water Department trek. The group also hiked there repeatedly to meet at Camp Coomash with walking sticks.
