Prosecution possible in Windham fish kill

Assistant Windham County State's Attorney J Garvan Murtha said an investigation into this week's Whetstone Brook fish kill continues and criminal prosecution is possible. A forklift punctured a container of toxic chemical at Brattleboro Kiln Drying and Milling Co causing a spill into the brook killing thousands of fish. The Fish and Game Department tests water and fish as officials consider charges under Fish and Game law or the new water quality act which carries penalties up to 100 dollars or 10 thousand dollars respectively.

Fire devastates South Mall building at Albany

A major blaze tore through the top six floors of a 23 story state agency tower at Albany's South Mall last night. Police logged the call at 10 27 p m and by 12 45 a m one floor had collapsed as fire consumed the upper structure. Fire crews faced access problems due to unsafe freshly poured concrete while a high wind spread embers to nearby rooftops. A steel superstructure crashed with loud explosions as a crane burned away, keeping crews cautious as the building neared occupancy in late 1973.

The 1971 Bennington Grand List stands at 80,346,900, up 1,394,500 from 1970, driven by real estate gains. Speaker Kennedy's Son Dies in Bradford Fire

Jeffrey Scott Kennedy age 17 son of House Speaker Walter Kennedy Jr. died in an early morning Bradford fire at the Farr residence. He was pulled from a second floor bedroom by a volunteer firefighter. Autopsy ordered as investigators probe the blaze and smoke asphyxiation as the likely cause. A party was believed held earlier. another person escaped unharmed.
