Wallace urges parents to decide busing in Alabama crisis
Gov. George Wallace urged parents to choose whether their children should be bused to schools against their will. He asked the Alabama legislature to pass an antibusing law and said parents, not federal judges, should determine school attendance under court orders. A Senate panel advanced the bill, while the State Board of Education opposed using funds to bus students for racial balance.

San Quentin gun traced to owner outside prison
The San Quentin warden said the gun used by black revolutionary George Jackson during Saturday’s escape attempt was traced to an owner outside the prison. Nine attorneys visiting inmates said Jackson claimed he was set up and not shot, while officials reported deaths of Jackson, three guards, and two white inmates. Warden Nelson acknowledged some rough treatment after the incident but said no one has laid a hand on anyone since. Top prison officials and Congressman Dellums planned visits to inspect the adjustment center. Separately, charges against 805 Capitol demonstrators were dropped after a test case led to a verdict of innocence.
