Fragile high elevations spotlighted in lecture at Bennington
Botany professor Hubert Vogelmann of UVM gave a slide show to the Bennington County Forestry Association detailing how fragile alpine zones above the 2,500 foot line in Vermont are and how small insults can cause long lasting damage. He showed trail and parking damage on Mount Mansfield, explained the bog and tundra sensitivity, and cited a 20 percent rainfall increase via fog interception. The presentation ended with AVM officials pledging to remove a nearby structure atop Mount Mansfield to protect the tundra, a move met with restrained applause.
