Former Arlington Resident Signs Viet Statement
Former Arlington resident John C. Schafer, a 1959 Arlington Memorial High School graduate and Peace Corps alumnus, signs the Committee of Returned Volunteers statement opposing the U.S. role in Vietnam. The paper, to be released in Ramparts and discussed at a Washington press conference, argues for withdrawal while Schafer favors a defensive hold. Schafer, now a teacher near Boston, reflects on idealism waning after Kennedy’s assassination and the war’s escalation, insisting signed veterans oppose the war out of love for America and concern for its future.
