Policeman Charged In Riot Murder in Detroit

Detroit news reports a white patrolman ordered to stand trial for murder in the shotgun slaying of a Negro teenager during the riot. A second white officer was freed for lack of evidence. Judge De Mascio led the proceeding as a crowd watched in tense calm.

Delays Testimony on College Merger in Vermont

Gov. Philip H. Hoff will testify before a blue ribbon committee on merging the University of Vermont and Vermont State Colleges boards only after the consolidation proposal is developed. In Syracuse New York a riot erupted as about 300 black youths smashed windows looted stores and set fires across several blocks. The disorder lasted until dawn with six injured and 28 arrested for unlawful assembly and disorderly conduct. An antipoverty worker was among the arrested.
