Report on Pesticide Exposure at Velsicol Plant
government scientists will study 155 current and former Versicol workers to determine if leptophos exposure caused nervous disorders at the Bayport plant near Houston. Eleven former employees showed issues from vomiting to paralysis. Velsicol, a Northwest Industries subsidiary, faced charges over health and safety violations while thirteen ex-workers filed suits. A forthcoming NIOSH report, led by Dr. Charles Xintaras, will be released next month after delays. follow-up checks may be limited by funds and access. The EPA inspected and found measurable discharges of leptophos outside the plant before production halted in 1976.
