Power firm refuses to guarantee no visible pollution from Berlin plant

Green Mountain Power and attorney Paul Sheehey refused at a Vermont Public Service Board hearing to promise there would be no visible pollution from a proposed Berlin power plant. Engineer Steven Knight urged daily river patrols and dikes for oil spill protection. Meteorologist Robert Miller warned the plant could alter weather, causing fog and more precipitation, and defoliate local vegetation. A Berlin resident claimed officials supported the project for tax revenue and violation of a state recreation plan. The hearing was adjourned to August 17 for more testimony.
