Archaeologist James Adovasio leads a five summer excavations at Meadowcroft Rockshelter near Avella Pennsylvania. The layered finds include charcoal hearths baskets stone tools and bone fragments suggesting human presence in the New World as far back as 16 000 years. While some evidence hints at 19 000 year origins scientists emphasize multiple corroborated dates before drawing firm conclusions. The dig runs 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. six days a week with 18 students.
