Arpent ers Consider New Offer
Burlington UPI reports striking carpenters will meet Thursday to decide on an improved offer from area contractors possibly ending a 27 day work stoppage in northwestern Vermont. Negotiations led by Federal Mediator John OReilly yielded undisclosed terms. Three hundred union members struck 32 projects worth nearly $20 million after a June 30 contract expiry. The union originally sought $2 an hour, later lowering to $1.25. Kenneth Jones of Kencliff Construction declined to detail terms beyond saying the offer is more than 90 cents per hour. Also noted, July precipitation totaled 2.65 inches, up 0.10 from a year prior, with year-to-date at 16.37 inches versus 14.19 a year ago.
