Government Troops Seize Viet Cong Arsenal in Mekong Delta

Government forces seized a large Viet Cong arsenal in the Mekong Delta, including about 1,000 rifles and machine guns, then repelled a counterattack. US Navy planes bombed North Vietnamese depots near Hanoi, destroying buildings and damaging facilities. Coast Guard units were mobilized to South Vietnam. In other actions, a Special Forces outpost near Phu Hiep faced heavy contact. a rail line was mined. carrier air strikes hit Thien Linh Dong and Phui Quan depots, with multiple buildings destroyed and trains disrupted.

More Troops Alerted For Dominican Action

The United States alerted additional forces to back up 1,700 Marines and 2,500 paratroopers in the Dominican Republic to evacuate Americans and other foreign citizens as law and order collapsed. Abel Declared Winner In Steel Union Vote

Abel won the United Steelworkers presidential race by about 10,000 votes, defeating incumbent David J. McDonald who plans an appeal. Abel, to take the $50,000 annual post June 1, pledged firm bargaining to a settlement before Sept. 1 and said no plans to move headquarters from Pittsburgh. McDonald declined comment on stepping down as chief bargainer.

Bennington Forum Deliberates Viet Nam Policy At High School

Bennington High School hosted a Viet Nam forum by the World Affairs Center drawing more than 169 attendees including many students. Panelists Manefred Ehrich John Williams II and R Arnold Ricks with Thomas Brockway of Bennington College discussed U S policy neutralization withdrawal or continuation with Williams defending the current approach as reasonable given government information.

Final Bypass Decision Due from Planners in August

A planned final recommendation for a U.S. 7 bypass around Bennington has been postponed to August 1 at the earliest. Bennington planning consultant John C. Burdis said most needed data from the Vermont Highway and Development Departments will not be ready until August, as the state agencies prepare traffic counts origin destination studies and ski-area traffic data. The commission will have two remaining route options, one eastern and one western, with preliminary plans showing changes and land impacts. The Highway Department will participate fully in preparing the report and will review all materials before a final choice is made.
