Hoosick Falls honors sculptor Jose de Creeft with memorial plaza
The Hoosick Falls village board approves a memorial plaza in Wood Memorial Park to honor Jose de Creeft, who summered in the village for 31 years. The sculpture The Guardian, carved in 1916, will be placed on a pedestal with a four sided bench, and the site will include eventual burial space. A fundraising committee of family, friends, and local art leaders will raise funds for the memorial. de Creeft, born November 1884 in Guadalajara, Spain, studied in Madrid and Barcelona before moving to Paris and later New York, known for massive stone and wood works and his Central Park Alice in Wonderland statue. He has exhibited at Kennedy Galleries, the Whitney, the Met, and MoMA among others. He recently stopped sculpting in stone at age 92.
