Morrill Act Fathered America’s Land-Grant Colleges
Vermonter Justin Morrill shaped higher education by championing the 1862 Land Grant Act. The act created 73 colleges focused on agriculture and engineering, expanding to arts and sciences and inspiring private schools to broaden access. Morrill also helped establish the Library of Congress site, the Smithsonian, and the Washington plan. His birthplace in Strafford VT is preserved as a historic site.

From Seedlings to Homes A Vermont Woodlot Study
A wood lot in Pownal on good soils yields about 12,000 board feet per acre, enough for one home, with 4,000 feet harvestable. Thinnings in 1951 and 1958 marked 133,000 and 124,000 board feet respectively, showing long term planning from seed to new houses and the effects of thinning and management.
