Soviet Cosmos III satellite launched amid Ranger 4 timing

Tass announced Cosmos III, a unmanned Soviet space probe with scientific instruments and a multichannel radio telemetric system, launched March 16 with Cosmos I and II to study radiation belts and meteorites. It orbits Earth every 93.8 minutes at 48 59 inclination, 448 miles apogee and 142 miles perigee. The Supreme Soviet recessed to hear the proclamation as Tass relayed the Ranger 4 moon shot shortly after.
