Bottle bill impacts Vermont revenue forecast
Vermont tax officials project the bottle bill will raise about 800000 in the next fiscal year. Tax Commissioner Edward Bartlett warned the total may fall short, and questions linger on which beverages are taxed. The measure imposes four tenths of a cent per container from July 1973, with initial revenues earmarked for landfill and recycling efforts.

Betit approves Medicaid funding for abortions in Vermont
Vermont Social Welfare Commissioner Joseph Betit authorized Medicaid payments for legal abortions under strict rules. Payments can be made when a doctor certifies by affidavit that the procedure is necessary to save the mother’s life or protect her health, following an Attorney General opinion. Several state attorneys say they will not prosecute abortions up to the 12th week, citing a Vermont Supreme Court ruling that the 1841 statute is invalid and that common law allows up to 14 weeks.
