Bay of Pigs veterans mark anniversary without flag
Bay of Pigs veterans observed the 15th anniversary of their Cuba landing as their battle flag remained in a bank vault for safekeeping. Attorney Ellis Rubin, representing the group, traveled to the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston to retrieve the flag presented to Kennedy in 1962 after a suit to recover it was filed last year amid calls to resume relations with Cuba. The plan to display the flag at Miami’s Monument to the Martyrs in Little Havana for Saturday’s ceremony was scrapped as Rubin kept it secured.

Explosions test Syrian plan amid Beirut fighting
Rival militiamen clashed with bombs and artillery across Beirut and eastern Lebanon as Syria’s peace accord faced the test, with heavy exchanges between leftists and rightists around Aintoura Mtein Bolonia and Mrouj. The joint committee met at Rashid Karami’s home to pursue a permanent truce while Syrian tanks remained near Masnaa. Arafat and Assad backed the accord, which called for a unified stand against renewed fighting and rejected UN or American solutions. Some reports argued over President Franjieh's constitutional amendment, with conflicting claims on whether he signed.
