GNP Surges 7.5 Percent in First Quarter 1976

UPI reports the Commerce Department said real Gross National Product rose 7.5 percent in Q1 1976, the strongest showing since the recession ended. Inventory buildup and lower inflation drove the gain, lifting GNP to about 1.238 trillion dollars.

Daigneault and Koch Named Vermont Athletes of the Year

Mt Anthony Union High School quarterback Alan Daigneault and Olympian Bill Koch were hailed as Vermont Athletes of the Year at a banquet in Montpelier. Daigneault led Mt Anthony to a state title, with 405 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns plus 15 completions for 4 touchdowns. Minot Delays Return as Souris River Recedes

Minot ND faced a slow river decline from a record Easter crest but dikes remain threatened. Mayor Chester Reiten said 13 000 evacuees may not return until next weekend amid fears of 10 to 12 feet of flooding. Hijacker killed as FBI shoots hijacked plane

FBI sharpshooters killed hijacker Roger Lentz who held two hostages aboard a Convair 990 at Stapleton International Airport after transferring from a commandeered light plane. Hostages pilot Robert Blair and mechanic Harlan Hillers were unharmed. Lentz, 31, from Nebraska, had a Nebraska criminal record and demanded a United jet. Government negotiators, including Gov. Richard Lamm, assisted, and Lentz refused talks with his brother Larry.
