Minot floods ease as dikes hold yet face higher risk

Minot officials voiced cautious optimism on Good Friday as the Souris River crest moved to 6.5 feet, a foot below earlier forecasts. Dikes 10 to 20 feet high were patched while volunteers monitored slippery clay walls amid continuing rain and evacuation pressures for thousands. The valley’s flood threat stretched to 14 feet over 4,200 homes, two shopping centers, 100 stores, six schools and 10 churches, with Gov. Link seeking disaster aid up to 6.8 million.

Beauty Wins Public Victory in Pownal Fire Incident

In Pownal the water used from the Pownal Waterfowl Preserve helped halt a fire at Everett Morgan's old barn set ablaze around 6:20 p.m. by a suspect vehicle described as a light green pickup. State police pursue a tires-loaded truck. three men in their 20s believed involved. Morgan reported a confrontation about junk prior to the blaze. Ms Jane Adams holds life tenancy on Morgan's estate. Cpl. Glen Hall is investigating the arson with help from local sources noting the preserve's swampy rise from a 1950s dam project.
