Hope Seen To Avoid Steel Strike
The chief of the Federal Mediation Service said there is a very good chance steel industry negotiators can resolve their differences and head off a May 1 strike in Pittsburgh. William E. Simkin, arriving from Washington, noted President Johnson favors a peaceful settlement but says not all matters may be resolved by May 1. He came on his own initiative to observe the talks and said both sides have had contact with him. If no headway is made by week’s end, mills may shut down as three to four days are needed to halt furnaces. He met with USW leaders David J. McDonald and I W Abel, and with U S Steel Corp executive VP R Conrad Cooper, who chairs the union negotiating team. Steel Talks continued on page 10.
