A Friday night fire heavily damaged the interior and most merchandise of the Benmore Store at North Street Shopping Center. Fire Chief Richard Hollister said origin is unknown and asked the state Fire Marshall to investigate. Spectators noted smoke earlier. a 9 34 p.m. call and 10 39 p.m. release followed. Bennington Fire Department, with four engines from the city and one from the rural district, fought the blaze as glass front windows shattered and retail stock lay ruined. Smoke affected Sears Roebuck and A and P stores but caused no major damage.
