Dr. A John Holden Jr., the state commissioner of education, endorsed a merger of Bennington's village and rural school districts. Speaking at a Monday meeting of both districts' directors committees, he called the move sound and noted Bennington's growing social integration.
Vermont House rejects education bills to raise teacher pay to 4800 dollars and provide free textbooks while sending both measures back to committee. The session also approves a revised compulsory school attendance rule and discusses district mergers under the Bennington South Supervisory Union.
In Pittsburgh USW negotiators tabled a three year contract proposal amid a looming May 1 strike. The plan offers three 17.5 cent annual wage rises aligned to 3.2 percent targets, with total package about 55 cents per hour and added living-cost and fringe-benefit components.

Governor Hoff urged Vermont legislators to drastically cut the House of Representatives after realignment. He argued Vermont ranks 47th in population and 43rd in area, and that a smaller chamber could save costs. he suggested 150 members with a 30 percent salary boost could be funded without higher costs. He noted even 120 members would still have fewer constituents than most states’ lawmakers.
