Cargo doors blamed in C5A crash near Saigon

The Pentagon says rear cargo doors blew off a C5A Galaxy carrying South Vietnamese orphans, severing hydraulic lines and causing rapid decompression. The pilot executed a skillful crash landing, saving many lives, but the plane crashed five miles from Tan Son Nhut, destroying the aircraft and killing over half of the 305 aboard.

Weather outlook with lingering snow and cold snap

Another windy spell continues with more snow and possible accumulation today. Temperatures top in the 30s while tonight remains cloudy and snow diminishes with lows in the teens to low 20s. Sunday brings sunny intervals, breezy conditions, and a high near 40 with additional flurries. Sunset 7:25, sunrise 6:28.

Salt shortage hits Bennington after storm

Bennington town crews ran out of road salt during a winter storm. Town Manager Harold R. Saunders said the shortage came from not stocking salt over the summer. He noted that even with more salt, heavy snowfall would have limited impact. Crews were forced to restart salt usage repeatedly as extra snow appeared. Saunders said the town contacted William E. Dailey Co. of Shaftsbury for additional supplies.
