U.S. Babylift flight crashes near Saigon killing many

A U S Air Force C5A Galaxy carrying 305 people including 243 orphans bound for the United States crashed near Tan Son Nhut airport during an emergency landing. At least 178 were killed. 100 children and 15 to 20 adults survived. The plane had 44 U S mission escorts and 16 aircrew. The crash halted plans for President Ford to greet orphans in California.

Thieu to Form New Government After Cabinet Resigns

President Nguyen Van Thieu announced that the South Vietnamese cabinet resigned and a new government will be formed with Nguyen Ba Can agreeing to lead. Thieu said the Communists cannot defeat the country’s determination as insurgent moves and troop withdrawals unfold around Saigon.

Capriola Faces Four Embezzlement Counts in Vermont

Bennington attorney Charles E. Capriola Jr. 41, already long practiced in Vermont, was charged by the attorney general with four felonies for embezzling funds from Vivian Caron Catherine Smith Jeanette Nardone and the Florence P. Burke estate. Each count carries up to 10 years or a fine up to $1,000 and possible disbarment. Capriola pled not guilty at a Bennington District Court arraignment held with Judge John Morrissey presiding. he expressed shock and proclaimed his innocence.

Ford orders naval ships to stand by near Indochina

President Ford ordered all available Navy ships to stand by near South Vietnam to assist refugees if needed and initiated an airlift of 2000 South Vietnamese orphans to the United States. He spoke in San Diego and met with Henry Kissinger in Palm Springs as officials noted possible evacuations for 5000 to 10000 Americans and tens of thousands of Vietnamese, though no mass evacuation was ordered.

Hazardous driving conditions hit county in spring storm

A surprise spring storm dumped up to two feet of snow in Bennington County forcing public employees to work through the night to clear roads and restore power. State police closed Route 9 while others faced bottlenecks on Route 7. Schools canceled and utility crews battled outages across Manchester Arlington and surrounding towns with hundreds left without power. Winds up to 60 mph and lingering flurries were forecast as crews labored to keep services functioning.
