Bennington Banner (Newspaper) - April 2, 1965, Bennington, Vermont Green Mountain Park to harness meet tonight opens second Spring after weeks delay Bennington Banner Friday april 2, 1965�?9 Pownal a Green Mountain Park in its third year of operation opens its second Spring harness racing season tonight after a week filled with hard work and chaos. K the track was originally scheduled to open last week but a dispute with the state forced the postponement. The dispute As has been the Rule and not the exception since the track started was Over the rate of tax to be levied on the 18 per cent of the Money that bettors put through the windows. Pownal starts at 8 10 and the Dilly double windows close at 8. General manager Vincent r. Bartimo says the delay Cost the track the loss of some 300 horses but that it was filled to capacity wednesday afternoon. At present Green of. Park can stable some 840 horses but plans Are being made to increase the stable capacity to 1,200 in the next six years. Bartimo also reported a 20 per cent increase in the purses in an Effort to lure better horses and Drivers to the Pownal Oval. A before the end of the harness season the track plans to run a big purse of either $7,500 or $10,-000, thereby attracting the nation s biggest Drivers and horses in the racing circuit to come to Green Mountain Quot he said.
