Vermont House debates scenic highway route and size plans
A House committee backs a 150 member plan for Vermont's legislature while debates over a western scenic highway route through Bennington versus an eastern alternative continue. Critics argue the western route harms beauty and development and costs more due to land and railroad crossings. A separate measure to tighten drunk driving laws, lowering blood alcohol from .15 to .10, will receive a floor vote next week.

Boy Injured On Gym Rings In Bennington High Incident
A 1-year-old from School Street, Richard Bird, was treated at Putnam Memorial Hospital after a fall from gym rings during a practice for an upcoming Bennington High School gymnastics exhibition. He suffered a concussion and possible skull fracture. X-rays would confirm. His mother Mary Nash cited recent ring repairs as a timing factor. Fellow students fear his release due to the school one act play finals in Vergennes. In Boston, the Weather Bureau forecasts five day normal to below normal temperatures across New England with light precipitation.

Hackel backs bill for wider job security in Vermont
Vermont Employment Security Commissioner Stella Hackel urged expanding unemployment compensation to include about 3,500 more employers at a public hearing. The bill would cover firms with one or more workers, up from current rule of three or more. Critics warned it could burden small startups, though Hackel argued firm size does not reflect business success.

Senate shifts to secret ballots for gubernatorial picks
Gov. Philip H. Hoff called the Senate move thunderstruck as it changed rules to provide secret ballots for confirming gubernatorial nominations. The chamber, in a 17 to 1 vote, barred open balloting after secret executive sessions and refused a roll call request to preserve anonymity. Hoff condemned the action as a flagrant disregard for public accountability and warned of indiscriminate character attacks without recourse for the nominee.
