MSBA Opposes State Rules On Education Desegregation

Minnesota School Boards Association directors voiced opposition to parts of proposed State Board of Education regulations at a Minneapolis meeting. They urged delaying socio economic segregation rules and criticized granting the state education commissioner power to reject school sites as overreach and infringing local voting rights.

Slaughter charges dropped amid Leech Lake suit

Minnesota officials call reports of rampant wildlife slaughter on the Leech Lake Reservation mostly rumor while a federal suit alleges the Leech Lake Band of Chippewa Indians slaughtering game to flout Minnesota laws. The Leech Lake Area Citizens Committee seeks an injunction to enforce state game laws and bar state officials from any agreement with the tribe.

Bemidji Armory Permit Discussed at Planning Meet

The City of Bemidji will seek a special use permit to build an armory on an 80 acre site as the Planning Commission meets at 8 p.m. in City Hall Council Chambers. After planning review, the armory issue goes to the city council at the next regular meeting. Warren D. Green of the House of Community will request another permit to convert the old Baptist Church at 722 Beltrami Ave into a Community Teen Center.

At Fort Benning Georgia a three officer clemency panel spent nearly two hours with Lt William L Calley Jr who is under house arrest after a 20 year sentence for the My Lai killings The session was closed to Calleys lawyers and to interview requests as his appeal proceeds with a separate military review underway in Falls Church Virginia.

Ten Die in Minnesota Holiday Traffic Toll

Ten persons died in Minnesota traffic accidents over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The toll rose to 917 for 1972, compared with 947 the previous year. Ruth Ann Murray, 26, Moorhead, was killed when the car she rode in left the road.

Shooting Probed in Red Lake Teen Death

Investigation continues into the shooting death of 15 year old Indian youth Brian Desjarlait on Red Lake Reservation early Saturday. Authorities say he was shot by a Red Lake Police officer during an arrest attempt after a shooting at a police vehicle. FBI agents assisted the probe as tribal officials restrict non residents from the village. Desjarlait was killed by a single head shot. weapon handed to the FBI.

Romney resigns as HUD secretary amid Cabinet shakeup
