NYC police intensify hunt for Son of Sam killer

New York City police added 10 detectives to 50 officers working full time in the manhunt for the Son of Sam, the .44 caliber killer. The New York Daily News offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to arrest and conviction. In 11 months, 11 people have been shot in Queens and the Bronx, dating from July 29, 1976, to last Sunday morning, with four women and one man dead and one woman paralyzed.

Plastics scrutinized after Tennessee prison fire toll

Washington AP reports the government probes polyurethane and polyvinyl chloride burning to assess safety. The plastics are common in upholstery, carpet padding, and vehicle and aircraft interiors, following Sunday’s fire that killed 42 inmates at a Tennessee prison.

Bemidji Holiday Inn valuation cut by Board of Equalization

Bemidji Board of Equalization reduced the 1977 assessed valuation of the Holiday Inn by 15 percent, cutting 1978 city taxes from about 63000 to 53000. The vote was 4 to 1 with Cameron McMahon and Les Jones absent. George Williams, Ralph Smith, and city assessors testified during the session. The Board, same members as the city council, meets annually to hear property tax complaints.

Beltrami County approves rural elderly bus program

Beltrami County Board finalizes a $7,267.20 contract with Bemidji Bus Lines for a twice monthly rural senior citizen bus service starting between mid August and early September. Six monthly round trips include Bemidji to Washish Kelliher Debs Pinewood Solway Wilton and Nebish routes with riders 60 and over eligible. A $1 contribution is optional per round trip.

Three Lavinia Boys Rescued After Eighthour Missing Spree

Three boys aged 8 10 and 11 from Lavinia were missing for over eight hours Tuesday afternoon. Sheriff’s deputies Civil Air Patrol and citizens searched east of Lavinia toward Bass Lake and along Burlington Northern tracks toward Turtle River before they were found near the Bemidji golf course road. A motorist returning them home said they hid from rain in a railroad ditch and walked back along old Highway 71.
