Arctic cold snap grips Midwest and South coast icebound
Arctic air and snow sweep the Midwest as Great Lakes and Mississippi River ice jam and hinder navigation. Temperatures plunge below zero from the Dakotas to Illinois and Missouri with further drop expected toward Texas and the Southeast. Ice on the Mississippi near Cairo and St Louis worsens, while Lake Michigan cargo routes stay blocked and Coast Guard assists Baltimore harbor. Georgia faces a potential 20 percent drop in cotton yield due to cold and wet conditions. Minnesota braces for 20 to 40 below overnight with 5 below to 5 below Sunday highs as heating fuel shortages loom.
