Orchard tour shows scientific pruning boosts apple crop

Carlos T. Mc Carty notes in the Loogootee Tribune that Martin County farmers visiting Sam uel Eis and Lawrence Fields on the Shoals to Leogootee road will see an orchard pruned scientifically with tops removed and limbs cut back. Spraying and careful timing have made the trees heavy with fruit, despite a poor regional apple yield. A Beech Fawsett orchard nearby, with Stayman’s Winesap trees, yielded the finest fruit last year and expects a strong, though slightly smaller, crop this season, due to pruning and spraying. Fawcett, a ridge land operator, emphasizes fruit profits from strawberries surpassing corn and wheat on many river bottom farms.
