International News Service reports plans for a general railroad employee strike if wage demands are not met and new guarantees of improved conditions are denied. The move could involve more than a million and a half workers, with details leaking from Washington.
President Wilson declared the Industrial Conference permanently adjourned. Chairman Lane announced the end at 12 43 pm after labor groups refused to rejoin. Wilson urged continued public sessions to draft an industrial report.
Homes of workers returning to the Gary steel mills were stoned at night. Federal troops were sent to restore order after three mills were attacked. Families were disrupted as destructionists were arrested in the unrest.
Washington October 23 The proposals are inadequate says secretary Wilson as wage increases for coal miners are debated. John Lewis comments on the strike and wage talks indicate a potential continuation of the coal labor dispute.

Wednesday morning about 4 o clock a woman screamed on a porch after a man in an army uniform tried to coax her into a taxi. Neighbors intervened and the woman, claiming she was being taken to the wrong place, eventually boarded the cab and left. police were not summoned.
Charles Spitzer remains in a very serious condition but shows slight improvement according to medical updates. Doctors say his vital signs are stable and he continues to receive intensive care treatment.
Joe Sharwell of Orleans received a letter from his sister in Mussia reporting their father’s death three years prior and her husband’s illness. They subsist on wild fruit in the woods as winter nears, while Joe and his brother E Sharashewsky try to send aid. Also, Albert Hollers of Springville welcomed a son, Robert Lloyd, this morning.
Charles Spitzer of West Thirteenth Street remains in serious condition after a Tuesday afternoon bicycle collision at 4 o clock. The rider involved in the crash has not been located and Spitzer cannot yet explain how the accident happened.
Fifteen year old Paul Allen, residing in the north part of the city, is held in the county jail awaiting action by the juvenile court. He is alleged to be incorrigible.
Dr Louis Van Norman formerly with the war trade board is appointed first trade commissioner to Poland. He wrote a book on Poland and has allied ties with Polish leaders. Poland with thirty million people and a territory the size of France may become a key economic factor in eastern Europe.
Miss Carrie Allen of Tunnelton, sister of Mrs. Charles H. Allen, has been very ill for weeks and will be brought to Dunn hospital Friday for a surgical operation. Her condition has grown worse in recent days.
Taris Oct 25 Formal ratification of the German peace treaty is expected on October 30. A call will be issued that day for the first meeting of the League of Nations council to occur within ten days. The delay is due to extensive preparatory work including commissions and military mission preparations under the treaty.
In Gary Indiana on October 23 a new raid led to the U S military prison operating with twelve prisoners held after multiple raids. Authorities cloak names and charge details, while union men fear bold strikes and intimidation near steel mills. Officers warn the situation must be controlled as rail workers threaten a broad shutdown linked to Wisconsin Steel and Tren.
Washington October 25. The railroad administration warned striking express employees in New York that if they do not return to work their places will be filled immediately. Interference with the conduct of the express business or its employees would be prosecuted under state and federal statutes.
Washington on October 23 reported a senate passage without record vote of a bill extending war time passport restrictions for one year. The measure excludes radicals and other undesirable aliens from the country and moves to conference. In San Francisco the Tere isen Kaisha liner Kippen Maru with 90 passengers ran aground at Half Moon Bay in dense fog but is not in immediate danger.
A home wedding took place Thursday at 9 15 AM in the Caress apartments East Sixteenth Street. Miss Laura Mason granddaughter of Mr and Mrs James Caress married Merlin Roach in a ring ceremony conducted by Rev S S Lappin. The couple plans a Chicago wedding trip and will reside at 637 East Sixteenth Street after November first. both families are prominent in the area.
Mr. James Travis and Miss Amy Kendall, both of Mitchell, were married at 11 o'clock Thursday in L. Smith's office by a Justice.
Mr Delbert Slaughter and Miss Lena Stevens of Stonington wed at 11 o clock Thursday in Justice J L Subichs office.
Thomas Bay, once declared of unsound mind, was transported to the Madison institution Wednesday. The trip, in an automobile, was supervised by Sheriff Lee and Chief of Police Frank Martin.
John E. Evans, a Bedford police member for about a month, resigned Thursday by handing in his badge and club. He gave no reasons and did not provide a written resignation.
Owing to a long dock strike in New Orleans a banana shortage affected the region. A relief shipment arrived from Mexico via an alternate seaport bringing large yellow bananas. Bananas in the market had previously come from British Honduras and Costa Rica.
Miss Thelma Starr daughter of J. D. Starr East 16th street celebrated her thirteenth birthday Tuesday evening. Ice cream cake and popcorn were served. Attendees included Mrs. Bair Mrs. Collins Charlotte Bair Bessie Knott Teresa Dausch Pearl Collins Fern Guthrie Elise Stasney Hattie Dausch Nina Guthrie Hortense Marty and Frances Stipp. Dancing music and games followed the celebration.
The Howland orchard and farm comprising 141 acres with 58 acres of bearing apple orchard was sold last week to C. M. Hobbs & Sons nurserymen and a man named Hawkins. Hawkins to become resident manager and move immediately.
