Spectacular rescue of Second Lieutenant Haynes and Matthews three miles out in Lake Erie by a Canadian steamer. Flight from Buffalo to Cleveland faced fierce conditions as Lieutenant Pearson reached Cleveland after battling the elements.
Gary reports first actual resistance to federal troops as a man fired four shots at a military patrol. No injuries.
International News Service reports from Des Moines on October 9 that the leading field in a major international race showed strong performances with several contenders tightening their positions as the event progressed.
Hostesses Mrs. Maude Childers and Mrs. Ertie Eaker hosted a Wednesday evening gathering on East Sixteenth Street. Grace Eaker announced her engagement to Stacy Elmore, pharmacist at Owl Drug, during a game, with pink and white decorations and music.
Frank Henderson colored was arraigned in Lawrence circuit court on grand and petit larceny charges and pleaded not guilty. Trials are set for November 20 for grand larceny and November 21 for petit larceny. Bond set at 1000 dollars each, Henderson has previously escaped Bedford officers and been recaptured. He is accused of stealing wheat from C. M. Lemon’s warehouse and selling it at Mitchell and stealing trousers from Joe Siciliano.
Gotleib Gehring employed by Interstate Public Service was overcome by gas while working in a ditch in front of the Richardson grocery Wednesday evening. He was revived by a physician at the Bedford Iron & Metal Company office. Hugh Fing of Huron was present.
Mrs. Nannie Ashcraft announces the marriage of her daughter Miss Aria Ashcraft to Mr. Glenn Ballard of Merino Colorado. The ceremony occurred September 30 at Sterling Colorado at Rev Payne’s home with Mrs. Ashcraft witnessing. After a Denver honeymoon they return to Merino where Ballard has prepared a home. Aria taught in city schools, worked at Merino State Bank, and was active in church circles. Ballard is Merino mayor, hardware and lumber businessman, school board member, and band member.
A hearing is scheduled for November 14 on Central Union Telephone Company's petition to raise rates. Regulators will review requested increases and impact on customers.

Jesse Chambers died at City Hospital at 1 10 o clock Thursday after a fifteen month illness. He underwent an appendicitis operation in Indianapolis about a year ago and a second operation was needed on Tuesday. Born in Lawrence county he is survived by his widow five children five brothers and two sisters. Funeral services will be conducted from the home at 2 30 o clock Saturday.
A luncheon was hosted by Mrs Charles Owen at her residence on East Sixteenth Street Tuesday. Guests included neighbors and friends who enjoyed a light menu and social hour in the afternoon.

Mrs. J J Quinn of Miami and Mrs. C Frederick of Chicago are visiting. ten guests enjoyed fried chicken mushed potatoes candied sweet potatoes cranberry ice hot rolls coffee stuffed tomato salad frambo pudding. Pinochle followed with Mrs. Sohn scoring high.
A northbound freight derailed five coal cars after a broken rail at Coalmont near the Big 4 Turn. The southbound passenger train arrived over three hours late, no injuries were reported, and a Terre Haute wrecker worked to clear wreckage and coal. Nearby observers and relatives were mentioned in brief notes.
