Water famine likely as flood nears peak

As the flood rises at about one inch every seven minutes the McKinley mark was passed mid afternoon and all local marks may soon be exceeded. Water supply to the city was cut at noon and may be reestablished from the pit pumps though protection above the pit is not watertight. Pumping operations were halted as water threatened to ruin the equipment and the river could soon flow into the pit. A water famine appears extremely probable given the rapid rise and failing pumping capacity.
