Thomas Tow angrily denies signing withdrawal cards in a Marion Township liquor remonstrance hearing. Attorney Giles presses to prove the signers withdrew, sparking audience applause as the case draws a large crowd and officials meet in the circuit court room.
The Holcombes seek to retain Pern Kerr children in a high profile custody dispute. An injunction and habeas corpus petition were heard in Judge Swails chambers, but Kerr illness postponed the hearing until next Tuesday. Kerr, employed in Montreal, is in the city to pursue the case. the grandparents press to keep the children.
Two new small pox cases were reported to Dr. F S Hunter secretary of the County Board of Health. Wilkinson of the edge of Oolitie is ill with the disease and the daughter of William Pendergraff on the Jackson farm west of the city also shows symptoms. The father has had small pox for two weeks and may have transmitted the illness to his child.
Contractor J. J. Quinn advances sewer contract in east part of the city with tiling laid and streets opening soon. Short east end streets disrupt deliveries, blasts on E street between 16th and 17th required heavy timbers over trench, nearby houses unharmed.
R. K. Wicker returns from Terre Haute and plans to open Washington Park for the season. The Terre Haute Walkovers visit Sunday to play the Champions, a fast aggressive group of youngsters, with Wicker likely to pitch.
The Bedford Elks traveled to Linton for a baseball game against the Linton Elks and won 7 to 6. They returned home Thursday morning. Katherine O Connell, daughter of Mr and Mrs James O Connell, shows improvement from diphtheria after recent illness.
Southeastern line workers witnessed a steel gondola loaded with steel shavings and scrap iron on fire Wednesday. Fire crews used a water crane to flood the car, cooling the blaze as embers burned among likely hot wood in the scraps. No cause given.
Gener Dug donated 25 to the widow of Peter Fielder in a local appeal. The event occurred in town with community support and noted by local observers.
The Loyal Order of Moose contributed 25 to Mrs. Peter Fielder widow of a murdered construction foreman. The victim was not a member and the donation was given to aid the widow left without support.
Henry Eker charged with failing to provide for his children was found probably guilty in police court. He was bound over to circuit court in the sum of $300, and in default of bond remained in jail. Eker acted as his own attorney and posted bond late Thursday for release.
John Meno resigns after several months as postmaster at Reed Station. He states he remains a Republican and is willing to turn the job over to a Democrat.
National League team standings show Phila Via leading with a .686 record, Pittsburgh 21 21, New York 22 17, St Louis 20 24, Chicago 22 2, Brooklyn 21 18, Cincinnati 17 27, Boston 14 33. American League lists Philadelphia 32 10, Cleveland 32 13, Detroit 18 29, Washington 24 19, St Louis 19 21, Chicago 9 21, New York 9 32. Various leagues report results, with recent scores across the three I League, Western League, Central League, and Wisconsin-Illinois leagues.
The Modern Woodmen of this city will hold their annual decoration day next Sunday with a gravesite ceremony. Members will march to the cemeteries and observe an appropriate program honoring deceased members.
The Bedford Council of Women met Wednesday afternoon at the Presbyterian church. Tri Kappa Sorority led the program on tubercular work, with Mrs. Lee Bailey reporting investigations of five aid cases and a landlord’s failure to treat a infected home. They plan a Red Cross lecture visit and ongoing child care. Civics notes urged longer Clean Up Day efforts and a city ordinance to clean premises twice yearly. Officers elected: President S I Avery, Vice President H M Burnham, Secretary Lee Bailey, Asst Sec Jessie Dunihue, Treasurer Wm Maglemre.
An intimate home wedding took place Wednesday evening at the Jackson residence. Miss Jennie Kate Jackson wed Louis Michael Ramsay with Rev. J. F. O Haver officiating. The bride wore brocade crepe de chine with orange blossom accessories and carried bridal roses. The groom, a Purdue student set to graduate next week, has secured a position in Schenectady, New York. A post-ceremony reception at the Ramsay home followed the ceremony.
Bloomington Ind June 4 An indictment charging murder in the first degree was returned by the Monroe County Grand Jury against Will Williams the Louisville Negro who killed W H Fielder a sub contractor on the Bloomington Southern at Kirksville Williams to be brought from Marlinsville Monday for trial Proser William M Louden assisted by Judge Robert M Miers of Kaiser Maloney contracting firm
Mrs Alonzo Hawkins of West 15th Street was painfully bruised Thursday when a limb snapped while she picked cherries at her home. The fall caused the injuries reported by local authorities.
The Samuel Gray estate case at Bloomington went to the jury at 11 a m on Thursday. Plaintiff administrator seeks $10 000 damages for his wife killed by a B O train at Mitchell. Case moved from here to Monroe county for trial.
Mrs A McKee, visiting Mr and Mrs J G Emery in this city, traveled to Springville on Thursday to visit relatives before heading home to Indianapolis.
Lorene Knight, daughter of Mr and Mrs Elza Knight who is convalescing from a severe typhoid attack, will spend the week as a guest of her grandmother Mrs Whitted on East 18th Street.
The Bedford Concert Band staged an open air concert Thursday evening in Court House Park after completing a temporary bandstand. The program featured Weldon Overture Adjutant’s March Princess Dream My Little Persian Rose Loving Hearts Boots and Saddles Serenade Moonlight Schottische and other selections conducted by W. E. Cannedy.
The M M C club met with Miss Bertha Walters on East 18th street and all enjoyed a good time after which refreshments of strawberries, cake and cream were served. Mrs. Robert Hunsucker, Miss Pauline Crawford and Amy Hunsucker have gone to Freetown to visit relatives for a few days.
Louis M. Ramsay of Bedford marries Jennie Kate Jackson of Bedford in a marriage license filing recorded locally.
Conductor Jack Condon of the Mo non resumed his regular southbound passenger No. 5 run Monday afternoon following a six week leave of absence. During his absence J. J. O Mara of the north division covered the run while Condon was in the East handling wage agreement matters for the Order of Railway Conductors. Bloomington World.
