The White Star Line reports the Arabic, carrying 175 passengers plus crew, was torpedoed at 9 15 am about fifty miles from the Lusitania disaster. Fifteen boatloads have been saved with survivors in reserve. Americ an presence unknown as the State Department investigates.
Berlin Aug 19 Chancellor Hollweg opened the Reichstag stating that Poland will not be restored to Russia when peace is declared and that an independent Polish Kingdom under Austrian or German suzerainty would be established.
Dallas reports the Texas storm death toll at 111 with the death list continually growing as new data arrive from the affected area across the state.

Hugh A. Todd and family Albert Littell and family and James H. Todd of this county left Wednesday morning in two Ford automobiles for Muskogee Oklahoma to visit relatives. The party expects rough roads and possible fording along the western route as they journey westward.

Thomas Smedley paid a $2 fine for intoxication in police court this morning. Connor Skerrell faced a $1 fine and costs for intoxication. Newland Day was fined $2 and costs for assault and battery. Cora Archer pleaded guilty to provoke and was fined $1. John Dillon pleaded guilty to assault and battery and was fined $1 and costs. Maude Fields, visiting from Ft. Ritner, returned home after a stay with Mrs. Dave Ragsdale and friends. Dr. Wier returned from Newberry. Mrs. Noah Hatfield is recovering from surgery at City Hospital. Mollie Conklin of Mitchell visited Mrs. Bell and family.
Jess Byers held 18 year old Charles Greer and 16 year old Ward Quillen at gunpoint Thursday morning near Gurveslane west of town until Chief Woodruff arrived. John Wright and Byers nabbed the pair while attempting to steal five chickens tied near the Bedford and Bloomfield tracks. The youths admitted stealing the poultry Wednesday. They were unable to post bond for a Friday hearing and were jailed.
Spokane Wickers Club defeated by 74 to 48. Vancouver at 61 and Seattle at 59. Tacoma and Seattle split results for a seven inning game. Standings show Spokane 6, Vancouver 5, Tacoma 2, Seattle 3.
A carved tarapin shell bearing the name Joel Hobbs and the date 1895 was found Saturday by Fred Younger on the Thomas Younger farm east of the city. The farmer noted Hobbs lived there about twenty years ago and the shell shows little travel since. The figure was about the size of a medium saucer and was shown to Hobbs by the finder.
The Dave Torphy place was raided Wednesday night but police found no intoxicating liquors. Misses Aileen and Olive Malott are visiting relatives at Erie. George W. Hall of Heltonville and George Chapman of Spice Valley township were in the city on Thursday morning on business.
The CAPTIST Association gathered in Avoca for a profitable two days ending Wednesday night. Attendance neared 300 with a 70 foot grove table banquet served by local residents. The 1916 Convention will meet at South Union Church Martin County near Burns City.

Two horses picked up by police were confirmed Tuesday to belong to a traveling show man with tents at Avoca. He called and took charge of the animals.
Old Union Church holds its annual meeting this Friday night with David Sears conducting the service and leading vices.
Mrs. Fannie S. Coffman aged 41 wife of Warren Coffman died at her North BR street home after a three week typhoid illness. Born in Kentucky she resided in the city two years and leaves her husband two married daughters and a son Mrs. Mary Byers Mrs. Pearl Ashley Jesse Lane and brother Macie Turpin. Funeral party will leave Saturday morning for Liberty Kentucky for services and interment.
M. Lane a traveling salesman for Van Camp hardware had a remarkable all night episode when his Ford stalled crossing a Brown county creek. With darkness and rising water he stayed in the car until dawn then called a nearby farmer, breakfast followed, and his vehicle was pulled free to continue to Bloomington without harm.
The friends of Mr and Mrs Nick Conklin who recently moved to Arizona report he is in failing health. They plan to seek a new climate, likely relocating to California for residence.
Miss Wilma Stafford of Heltonville was in the city Thursday on her way home after visiting relatives at Peerless. Mrs Homer Brown and her young son went to Midtchell Thursday to visit Mr and Mrs Frank xyoldman and family.
