Fortress Brest, described as Russia's greatest stronghold, has fallen to German and Austrian troops at Brest Litovsk, marking a major victory reported from Berlin. The capture is announced by United Press as part of continued German advances.
Indianapolis August 26 James Bud Gibson unexpectedly pleaded guilty today to election conspiracy charges tied to an indictment naming Thomas Taggart Bell Perrott and about a hundred others He requested jail under Sheriff protection Taggart said he never knew Gibson or had dealings with him and Gibson's change of plea stunned the defense
Bloomfield baseball team returns Sunday for a game with the Bedford Cubs at Washington Park. First pitch is at 2 30. Bloomfield has beaten Elnora and the Huff Specials in recent games. Ladies admitted free.
The Bedford Concert Band has been asked by Secretary Harrold of The Great White Band to perform in Indianapolis on Labor Day for the Consolidated Organization. The Bedford group weighs the trip since it would only be paid expenses in Indianapolis, while Bedford offers higher earnings for the same holiday event.
On parade night Mr and Mrs Joseph Campbell celebrated their marriage with a celebratory ride given by friends as they passed through town. The event drew neighbors and well wishers who cheered the couple along the route.
Newland Day was arrested Wednesday night on charges of assault and battery with intent to kill Dee Woody. The trouble, already in police court, occurred east of the city. Day bonded for the preliminary trial likely next week.
The recently married couple were surprised by friends at their home on a Wednesday evening. They were tied together and ridden through main streets in a coal wagon drawn by an old gray horse, then brought back home and forced to treat the crowd.
William Elston the dairyman north of the city Thursday received 36 fine young cattle. The Jerseys range from yearlings to two years old and were bought at Milltown near New Albany. He will add them to his large dairy farm, aiming for one of the region’s largest herds.
Heltonville hosted a large Willing Workers district meeting with a Sunday school class from this city. The group arrived with full baskets for a picnic lunch at noon and attended the services afterward.
The Southeastern Thursday sold 111 tickets to Hellonville for Bedford Christian church members attending an all day meeting and picnic there.
Members of the Owensburg Methodist church will host an all day basket meeting on Sunday with many attendees expected to travel from the city.
Misses Evalon and Beulah Pearson host a house party this week at their suburban home south of the city. Guests include Miss Frances Sheeks and Miss Lorene Callahan with Miss Florence True of Orleans. News also notes marriages and correspondence involving residents from Mitchell and Bedford, plus a local man at Columbus Barracks bound for the coast.
Col C. C. Matson once of this town and now in Chicago is critically ill at his son Reese Matson’s home. He has been in ill health for months and is weakening daily, with fears he may not recover.
The Naghes and Mahacany Stars schedule the second game of their series at the Shea and One Diamonds on Sunday afternoon at 2 15. William Chesnut of Springville visited the city on business.
The Ladies Aid of Hope Baptist Church on 22nd Street hosted a quilting bee with Mrs. Ollie Marks east of the city. Fourteen members attended and were served peaches ice cream and cake. The next meeting is set for September 1 with Mrs John Krantz on Washington Avenue.
Northwestern League standings show Spokane over Seattle and other teams with partial records. Wednesday games list Seattle, Tacoma, Vancouver, Spokane results. Local notices report Mrs. C. E. Ray visiting Williams and George Hendrickson, and a birth announcement for John Ernest Castillo southeast of the city.
A coop of 39 chickens owned by Howard Fields arrived from Chicago to Bedford via No. 5 mail and express after a across several cities. Fields had moved from Pensacola to Louisville with a basket of baby chicks four months earlier. the missing birds were traced to the baggage car and later found in a Chicago bound shipment. Some birds perished on the journey, but the surviving fryers averaging about two pounds now return home.
Large Heltonville gathering for an all day Christian church meeting and picnic drew many women and some men. The list includes Mrs. J R Webster Mrs Otto Negadank Mrs J S Johnson Mrs W S Long Mrs Will Brook ing Mrs Will Lewis Mrs Frank Green Miss Lottie Wallheiser and others with many names not obtained.
Woody Still was summoned to Bowling Green Kentucky where his father lies at the point of death at his home. He fell while picking cherries this spring and never recovered from that injury. The elder Still is well known in the city.
The State of Indiana versus intoxicating liquors Tony Rock Mary Rock and Mike Battalio had a finding of guilty entered on Justice Malott's docket and an appeal was taken to the Lawrence circuit court. Mrs M L Franklin of English was in the city en route to Oolitic.
Professor Louis Martin who leaves for Chicago next week will present a farewell student recital at the First Christian Church Friday at 8 oclock. He directs a large class with a superfine program and no admission will be charged. The program features Titania by Juanita Fields Capriccio Brilliant and two pianos Liszt Mendelssohn pieces performed by Georgia Lockenour Helen Gibson and others including Mildred Scully Ruth Standish Lavallee and Georgia Malott.
